Mets Tidbits

wright_st_2_245z4eqg_peap5jgx

  • David Wright is scheduled to make his first Grapefruit League appearance Friday night against the Washington Nationals at Tradition Field. It is unclear if he will be playing in the field, or strictly a DH. Regardless of where he is playing, it’s great to see Wright out there ready to play.
  • Steven Matz is scheduled to pitch after Jacob deGrom on Thursday afternoon, when the Mets head back to Jupiter to play the Miami Marlins.
  • Jim Henderson has reportedly impressed Mets officials and coaches this spring with his performance thus far. Henderson has only allowed 1 ER in 5 innings, with 7 strikeouts. Henderson’s velocity has seemed to return as well, as his fastball has been clocked at 95 mph this spring. The Mets may opt to not carry a long-reliever if Henderson makes the team out of Spring Training, as the Mets have 4 off days, the first 2 weeks of the season.
  • Aside from Matt Reynolds, Alejandro De Aza may benefit the most from the recent release of Ruben Tejada. De Aza who has been drawing significant interest from other teams, could be retained by the Mets as their best bat off the bench. De Aza also would be a proven veteran off the bench, that the Mets could count on now that Tejada is gone. I don’t see De Aza being moved before Opening Night unless the Mets receive an offer they can’t refuse.
  • Chicago White Sox DH/1B and bonafide Mets killer Adam LaRoche is reportdily set to retire, citing personal reasons. The White Sox have given LaRoche a few days to mull over the descion before it becomes official. Ken Rosenthal reported this afternoon that the White Sox  front office no longer wanted LaRoche’s 14 year old son hanging out in the clubhouse, and as a regular fixture with the team which may be the personal reason LaRoche is citing. LaRoche ranks fourth among active players with 29 career home runs against the Mets, and was set to face the Mets when the White Sox come to Citi Field for a series the last week of May.

Mets officially release Ruben Tejada

usa-today-9140564.0

The New York Mets announced the release of shortstop Ruben Tejada this afternoon, after being unclaimed on waivers. The Mets are only responsible for $500,000 of Tejada’s $3 million salary, and Tejada is now free to sign anywhere.

Tejada surprisingly went unclaimed on waivers, but much of that was due to the $3 million  he was scheduled to make this season. You can expect there to be a quite a bit of interest on the open market for Tejada’s services. Tejada has heavily been linked to the St. Louis Cardinals due to their opening at short, but their interest has reportedly been overblown by the media. Now that Tejada doesn’t carry a salary of $3 million, I would expect them to make a play for him, as well as other teams who are looking to round out their bench.

Matt Reynolds should be a virtual lock for the Opening Night roster at this point, with Eric Campbell also possibly in the mix as well for a spot. Both players will be considered bench depth, with Wilmer Flores scheduled to be the starting shortstop on Opening Night in Kansas City, if Asdrubal Cabrera is still injured.

Game Notes:

  • In Noah Syndergaard’s second start of the spring, he went 3.2 innings allowing 5 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 3 K’s.
  • Travis d’Arnaud who started at DH, went 1-3 with a bases clearing double in the top of the 5th.
  • Wilmer Flores got the start at shortstop and was 0-2 with an RBI. He drove in a run on a bases loaded walk.
  • Travis Taijeron who was assigned to minor league camp today, went 2-5 with a run scored. He is still hitting at a ridiculous average of .385.
  • Antonio Bastardo had another rough outing, in 0.2 innings pitched he allowed 3 ER, on 3 hits with 1 K.
  • Jim Henderson had his first tough inning this spring allowing 1 ER on 3 hits, with 2 K’s in one inning of work.
  • Jeurys Familia pitched another scoreless inning with 1 K and 1 HBP.

Today’s game may ultimately be remembered for the bus ride that left Tejada behind. All jokes aside, Syndergaard pitched good this afternoon as he was only burned on an RBI single by up and coming Mets killer Justin Bour. Syndergaard’s fastball was being thrown as high as 99 mph, with his slider hitting 91 MPH. No other starting pitcher in baseball in my opinion, consistently brings the power stuff that Syndergaard brings, from the 1st pitch of the game to the 120th pitch. I do not believe he is in for a major sophomore slump, as he seems to grow and get better with every start he makes. Syndergaard was also hit by a comebacker during his start but immediately waved the trainers off which was great news. Antonio Bastardo who must be experimenting with his pitches, continues to get hammered this spring. Luckily it’s still spring and none of these appearances matter, so I won’t jump on the panic train early. I just hope these numbers are something we won’t have to reflect on during the regular season.

  • The Mets are off tomorrow but will head back to Jupiter on Thursday to face the Marlins again. First pitch is slated for 1:05 pm et and the game will not be televised. The game can be heard however on MLB.com.
  • Jacob deGrom is expected to make the start for Thursday’s game, and the Marlins will send their ace right-hander Jose Fernandez to the mound.

Mets Tidbits…

  • Zack Wheeler threw off the top of a mound this afternoon for the first time since his Tommy John operation. Wheeler previously threw 10 pitches from the slope of the mound last week. This is a huge step in Wheeler’s rehab from Tommy John surgery, and he is still slated to make his return on July 1st.
  • Right-handed reliever Erik Goeddel threw a second bullpen session this afternoon. He is going to have one more session before getting into game action, with game action as early as possibly Sunday according to ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin.
  • David Wright took some swings in batting practice, back at the Mets facility in Port St. Lucie today off of rehabbing pitcher Josh Edgin. Wright’s next steps will be determined after he meets with Terry Collins. I still strongly believe we will see Wright on Friday in game action at Tradition Field.
  • It is also good news to see left-handed reliever Josh Edgin getting some work in this afternoon. Edgin who was becoming a dominant lefty, missed the entire 2015 season, and is recovering from Tommy John surgery as well. He is expected back with the big club around May 1st.
  • Sirius XM’S Robert Brender reported today that former Mets pitcher Vic Black has undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Black who is currently a free agent, most likely will sit this season out and rehab, with a return in 2017 most likely.

Ruben Tejada placed on waivers…

ruben-tejada1.jpg

ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin is reporting that the New York Mets have placed shortstop Ruben Tejada on waivers this morning. There has been no comment made by General Manager Sandy Alderson as teams can’t discuss players on waivers. Tejada was reportedly on today’s travel roster to Jupiter to face the Marlins but his bag was never put on the team bus.

This move can be looked at as a move the Mets wanted to make for the sake of Tejada’s salary, as it was no longer a fit with the amount of depth the Mets have at shortstop. Tejada was due to be paid $3 million this season if he made the team, but due to the Mets making this move 15 days or more before Opening Night, the Mets are only responsible for $500,000 of his salary.

Asdrubal Cabrera will more than likely be back by the second week of the regular season, and until then Wilmer Flores and Matt Reynolds, will be capable of handling the shortstop position. Reynolds may get the majority of starts at shortstop during Spring Training, as Flores has been filling in at third base, while David Wright has been out of the lineup. Flores had shown improvement defensively at shortstop last season as the season wore on.

For Tejada, it’s a tough way to end his career in a Mets uniform. Tejada was pegged as the replacement to Jose Reyes, when Reyes left to the Miami Marlins, and Tejada struggled with consistency on and off the field. When Tejada’s leg was broken on the Chase Utley slide last postseason, this team rallied around Tejada, and Ruben came into camp  determined and in the best shape anyone in the organization had seen him in before. Tejada proving he is healthy this spring after the gruesome injury he suffered, helps his prospects of landing another job soon.  The St. Louis Cardinals who have an area of need at shortstop, figure to show the most interest.

Final: Tigers 9 – Mets 2

i

The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Mets this afternoon by the final score of 9-2. For a full box score recap follow the link below…

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2016_03_14_nynmlb_detmlb_1#game=2016_03_14_nynmlb_detmlb_1

Game Notes:

  • Wilmer Flores had a perfect day at the plate going 3-3 with 2 runs scored.
  • Kevin Plawecki was 2-4 with an RBI single in the top of the 2nd.
  • Alejandro De Aza was 1-2 with with an RBI.
  • Johnny Monell was 2-3 with a double.
  • With deGrom not making the trip, starting pitcher Seth Lugo pitched 2 scoreless innings allowing no hits, 1 BB, and 2 K’s.
  • Hansel Robles was roughed up in an inning of work allowing 2 ER, on 3 hits, with 1 K.

Wilmer Flores had a great day at the plate and seems to have sky high confidence in his abilities right now. Flores is going to be a big part of this team’s success this season, and the start he has gotten off to only helps his confidence and the team’s confidence in him as well. Flores is hitting an astounding .556 this spring. Matt Reynolds did not have the best day in the field as he committed an error and had double clutched on a ground ball hit by Justin Upton in the fourth that allowed a run to score, as Upton was ruled safe at first. It’s not the kind of showing Reynolds wants to have as he is battling for a roster spot with Asdrubal Cabrera on the shelf. Seth Lugo worked out of trouble and came out unscathed in the 2nd inning when the bases were loaded due to a Matt Reynolds error, and a walk. Lugo may be called upon from AAA this season to help out when a need arises with the big league club, due to the success he has had this spring. Hansel Robles got burned by a 2-run homer by J.D. Martinez in the bottom of the fifth. Robles has had a good spring so far, so view this outing as just a blip at this point.

  • The Mets travel to Jupiter tommrrow to face the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium with a 1:05 pm et first pitch. The game will not be televised, but the game can be heard on the Marlins Radio Network if you have an MLB.tv Premium subscription.
  • Noah Syndergaard is scheduled to make his second start of the season, against Marlins lefty Justin Nicolino. Also scheduled to pitch for the Mets include, LHP Antonio Bastardo, LHP Jerry Blevins, RHP Jeurys Familia, RHP Jim Henderson, RHP Addison Reed, LHP Sean Gilmartin, and RHP Logan Verrett.

David Wright goes 1-5 this afternoon…

Cdhuo8lW4AAbUz2.jpg-large(David Wright in Minor League action this afternoon; Photo taken by Anthony Dicomo, New York Mets beat writer for MLB.com.)

David Wright jumped around a couple of minor league games this afternoon, to get some work in the batters box. In Wright’s first appearance of the season facing live pitching, Wright went 1-5 with a strikeout. His lone hit was a single in his fourth at-bat. Wright did not play the field in any of these games but he did run the bases. According to Newsday’s Marc Carig, Wright will face live batting practice tomorrow, and the Mets will determine his next course of action after their off-day on Wednesday.

The expectation for Wright today was to face some live pitching, and run the bases which was the last step that has been laid out to him by the Mets training staff. I still expect Wright to play in Friday’s contest when the Mets return to Tradition Field to get some in-game action. Wilmer Flores has been working hard at third base all spring and it’s great that he’s receiving tons of reps, as at some point in a worst case scenario, he may be expected to play more third base than he originally expected. Wright has been thought to be limited to 130 games this season, with possibly Wilmer Flores filling in for the other 32 games. As long as Wright’s back feels fine over the next couple of days, I see no reason why he shouldn’t be ready for some game action this week as we approach the middle of Spring Training.
