Last Night Was Bigger Than Baseball
I’ll forgive you if you don’t remember the score of last night’s game, as despite the Mets being in the middle of a postseason race, last night was much bigger than the game of baseball. I’ll admit I did not pay much attention to the score after Dee Gordon’s lead-off home run. It was almost the first time as a Mets fan in my life that I did not mind if they won or lost because there was a bigger picture in play. You could not help but get emotional watching the pregame ceremony tribute to the late Jose Fernandez, or shed a tear watching Gordon’s lead-off home run. Even the Mets were choked up by last night’s events as catcher Travis d’Arnaud admitted to shedding a tear during Gordon’s inspiring home run.
The Mets were in one of the toughest situations any opposing team could be in and they handled it with as much class as possible. Dee Gordon even praised the Mets after the game as a “first class organization” for the way they handled last night’s game. Our team is currently in the thick of a Wild Card race with their own agenda, but humanity took over last night and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen on a baseball field.
Jose Fernandez tragic death has resonated with everyone associated with the game of baseball as he was one of the biggest star’s on and off the field in the world of sports. It’s going to be a tough final week for the Marlins and an even tougher offseason for the organization in trying to pick up the pieces of what occurred. However last night, I was proud to be a Mets fan win or lose because of the humanity, emotion, and class they displayed in one of the most, if not the most tragic event in baseball history.
The Mets and Marlins have two games remaining in this series and it certainly will still be tough on everyone involved to play. But Jose Fernandez played the game the right way with intensity and would expect nothing less from both teams. The Mets were fortunate to have the Cardinals get pummeled last night, and hopefully our team can get back on track as a Wild Card birth hangs in the balance. It still will not be any easier, but hopefully last night both teams found some sort of peace with being on the field and playing the game they love. With five games remaining the Mets will somehow have to put their foot on the gas beginning tonight if they want to return to October.

Rest In Peace Jose Fernandez
The baseball world is mourning the loss of the Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez who tragically passed away in a boating accident off the coast of Miami Beach early this morning. The 24-year old Fernandez was regarded as one of the best pitchers in baseball and many of us Mets fans experienced that firsthand, as he had dominant numbers throughout his young career against the Mets. Fernandez was scheduled to start tomorrow night against the Mets.
Fernandez had announced recently that both he and his girlfriend were expecting their first child together. It’s a true testament as to how short life is and how precious every moment in life is as well. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the Marlins organization through this incredibly difficult time. There was not a star bigger or nor a smile bigger in Miami currently than Jose’s, and the entire baseball community will proceed with heavy hearts through the rest of the season. Rest in peace Jose.

- Coming in as a pinch-hitter and a defensive replacement, Curtis Granderson went 2-2 with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs.
- Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-4 with a 2-run HR.
- Jose Reyes went 4-5 with a double and two runs scored.
- Wilmer Flores was 2-4 with an RBI single.
- Seth Lugo pitched six innings while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 4.
- Jeurys Familia needed just one out to pick up his 43rd save of the season matching his career high and tying the franchise record.
Here come the Mets full steam ahead! The Mets are playing some of the best baseball they have played all summer and are continuing to make a push to secure a Wild Card birth. The Mets will sit either 2.5 or 2 games behind St. Louis depending on the final score of that game later tonight. The Mets also passed Miami in the Wild Card standings and have an opportunity to add to that lead over the next two games. While it has been such a trying season for this team, they somehow manage to continue to fight and claw their way back into the playoff picture.
Curtis Granderson, who has been struggling this season, was not in the original starting lineup but he played a huge factor in tonight’s game. The Grandyman hit a pinch-hit home run for Seth Lugo in the bottom of the sixth, and then slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh after being inserted into right field. In what has been a difficult season for Granderson, it was nice to see him have a big role in tonight’s victory and maybe tonight’s game can get his bat going in the right direction over the final month of the season.
Jose Reyes has also changed the dynamic of this lineup and continued his torrid hitting with a 4-5 night. The energy Reyes brings to the team and also his production at the top of the lineup has done wonders for this team since his acquisition. Reyes has hit .356 in August for the Mets, joining red-hot teammates Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera who have been carrying this team over the past two weeks. Regardless of this seasons outcome, Reyes has proven more than enough to both the organization and the fans that he deserves to be a Met next season.
Despite giving up a two-run homer to Christian Yellich in the first inning, starter Seth Lugo quickly put it in his rearview and rolled for five scoreless innings. Lugo has been quite a pleasant surprise for Mets fans, and despite his numbers in the PCL friendly ballparks I was a big fan of the way his stuff looked in Spring Training. Lugo will continue to make starts for the Mets down the stretch and he could be the Mets unsung hero if they somehow make the playoffs, as he has helped solidify the back of the rotation despite all the injuries and push backs. Lugo after tonight’s start has a sparkling 2.60 ERA.
Look I’m sure with the way things have gone lately I’ll be in for some kind of bad injury news tomorrow from the Mets, somehow someway. I just have learned to expect it. But tonight’s win is extremely satisfying and I will bask in it’s glory until I hear otherwise.

Game Notes:
- Yoenis Cespedes went 3-5 with a walk off solo HR in the bottom of the 10th.
- Jose Reyes was 1-5 with a double and would score the tying run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 8th.
- Rafael Montero went 5 innings in his first big league start of the season while allowing no runs on two hits. He walked 6 and struck out 3.
- Addison Reed had a rare off night as he pitched an inning while giving up 1 run on 2 hits. He walked none and struck out 1.
WHAT A WIN!! Tonight’s game felt like a playoff game and rightfully so between two teams in the thick of the NL Wild Card race. The Mets were able to walk off on the heroics of none other than our star player Yoenis Cespedes, as he deposited a 92 mph fastball deep into the left center field seats to give the Mets a much needed win in extras tonight. I will be watching that home run over and over for the next 24 hours as it was simply a thing of beauty.
The Mets over the past week and a half with Cespedes in the lineup have some sort of magic that follows them, similar to last season and it’s hard to ignore it. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth after Addsion Reed was touched up for a run in the top of the inning, Jose Reyes led the bottom of the inning off with a double, and advanced to third on a fly ball from Alejandro De Aza. Reyes would then come home and score on a violent collision at home plate with Marlins pitcher A.J. Ramos who had thrown a wild pitch to the backstop. Reyes would be down for a few moments as he looked severely injured, but he eventually hopped up to the delight of the Citi Field crowd and remained in the game.
With Jacob deGrom’s start being pushed back to Friday and the Mets calling up Rafael Montero to take his place from Double-A, you have to agree the pitching tonight exceeded expectations. Montero and the bullpen went toe to toe with the Jose Fernandez who always stymies the Mets, and gave the Mets a chance to pull off tonight’s victory. While Montero was a bit erratic on the mound and flirted with danger multiple times, he danced around it and ultimately oddly pitched five scoreless innings with six walks. You can’t make this stuff up, but of course we will take it! And shout out to the bullpen who despite Addison Reed’s off night (hey it happens) pitched incredibly the whole night! A combined five innings of one run ball with three hits and six strikeouts is getting it done.
The Mets won’t gain any ground on the Cardinals tonight as the Cardinals won, and they will still sit 2.5 games behind them for the final NL Wild Card spot. They are now even however with the Marlins in the standings and could pass them tomorrow night with another victory.

A huge win for the Mets this afternoon and an even bigger series win against the Marlins. The Mets who are currently neck and neck with the Marlins for the second wild card spot, as well as battling for second place behind the Nationals, couldn’t afford to drop this series and fall further back in the standings. Once again a very big win today no other way around it, especially in the demoralizing fashion the Mets lost in last night. The Mets now trail the Marlins by a half-game in both standings.
Michael Conforto made his first start in center field for the Mets and on the first ball off the bat of a Marlins hitter, the ball headed straight towards Conforto. The 23-year old outfielder made a highlight reel of a catch that would make Juan Lagares proud and immediately established his identity in center field. Steven Matz reaction after the catch was priceless. Conforto also had a nice day at the plate with two hits and a run scored. Manager Terry Collins wants to get Conforto’s bat in the lineup to help the sluggish offense, and if Conforto could produce offensively as he did earlier this season he will find his name in the lineup card more often.
Jeurys Familia had a stress-free ninth inning to pick up his 35th save of the season and he also tied Jose Valverde for third place with 51 straight consecutive saves. Familia’s historic run has been such a welcome sight of stability for the Mets bullpen that has been solid all season. Speaking of great pitching performances, Steven Matz gave the Mets a great start this afternoon, as he picked up his first victory since May 25th. The Mets will need more starts like this down the stretch from Matz to help fortify the rotation after the loss of Matt Harvey for the season. I believe he has the talent and stuff to be a big factor for this team down the stretch.
- The Mets and Cardinals will open a big three game series with Wild Card ramifications tomorrow night at Citi Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm et. The game can be seen on SNY.
- Noah Syndergaard (9-4, 2.43 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Mets and face the Cardinals top starter in right-hander Carlos Martinez (9-6, 2.83 ERA).
