Former Mets News & Notes

usa-today-9178083.0

  • Former Mets pitcher Matt Bowman is now slated to make the St. Louis Cardinals Opening Day roster due to reliever Jordan Walden battling a shoulder issue. Bowman was selected by the Cardinals in this past December’s Rule 5 Draft, and had been highly questionable to make the Opening Day roster until Walden’s latest shoulder setback. Bowman is required to be on the Cardinals 25-man roster for the entire 2016 season or be returned to the Mets, unless a trade is able to be worked out. Bowman can’t be put on the disabled list until he has been an active roster member for 90 days. The 25-year old right-hander holds a 7.88 ERA in 8 innings pitched this spring, and is ranked as the Cardinals 21st best prospect by MLB.com.
  • Former Mets closer Bobby Parnell who had been released by the Tigers earlier in the week, has agreed to a minor league deal to stay with the Tigers. Parnell will report to Triple-A Toledo with the hope of receiving a call-up later this season. Parnell had an 8.68 ERA this spring in 9.1 innings pitched, but has been clocked as high as 96 mph in Grapefruit League action. The Tigers believe if Parnell can get better command of his pitches he could pitch for them at the big league level this season.
  • Yankees manager Joe Girardi had stated on air during today’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, that former Mets right-handed pitching prospect Luis Cessa has made the team out of Spring Training. Cessa was originally included with right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer to the Detroit Tigers, in the Yoenis Cespedes trade at last year’s Trade Deadline. Cessa was then traded by the Tigers this offseason to the Yankees for left-handed reliever Justin Wilson. Cessa will pitch out of the bullpen for the Yankees, and has a 2.70 in 10 innings pitched.

Former Met Bobby Parnell released…

ea95683aa66869bf6eaeb4b847e8b40f

Former Mets right-handed pitcher Bobby Parnell was one of many cuts made by the Detroit Tigers this afternoon. Parnell was given an unconditional release and is free to sign with any team. Parnell originally signed a Minor League deal with Detroit in the offseason, after he struggled in his return to the Mets bullpen last season.

Parnell struggled this spring with the Tigers allowing 15 hits and 9 earned runs over 15.1 innings. Parnell’s fate was sealed when he allowed five runs to the Blue Jays last Tuesday, while only retiring one batter. The good news for Parnell is that his velocity seems to be returning but he is going to be hard-pressed to find a Major League deal. Parnell could benefit pitching in the minors for a couple of months before getting another crack at the Majors later this season.

Game Notes:

  • Wilmer Flores had a perfect day at the plate going 3-3 with 2 runs scored.
  • Kevin Plawecki was 2-4 with an RBI single in the top of the 2nd.
  • Alejandro De Aza was 1-2 with with an RBI.
  • Johnny Monell was 2-3 with a double.
  • With deGrom not making the trip, starting pitcher Seth Lugo pitched 2 scoreless innings allowing no hits, 1 BB, and 2 K’s.
  • Hansel Robles was roughed up in an inning of work allowing 2 ER, on 3 hits, with 1 K.

Wilmer Flores had a great day at the plate and seems to have sky high confidence in his abilities right now. Flores is going to be a big part of this team’s success this season, and the start he has gotten off to only helps his confidence and the team’s confidence in him as well. Flores is hitting an astounding .556 this spring. Matt Reynolds did not have the best day in the field as he committed an error and had double clutched on a ground ball hit by Justin Upton in the fourth that allowed a run to score, as Upton was ruled safe at first. It’s not the kind of showing Reynolds wants to have as he is battling for a roster spot with Asdrubal Cabrera on the shelf. Seth Lugo worked out of trouble and came out unscathed in the 2nd inning when the bases were loaded due to a Matt Reynolds error, and a walk. Lugo may be called upon from AAA this season to help out when a need arises with the big league club, due to the success he has had this spring. Hansel Robles got burned by a 2-run homer by J.D. Martinez in the bottom of the fifth. Robles has had a good spring so far, so view this outing as just a blip at this point.

  • The Mets travel to Jupiter tommrrow to face the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium with a 1:05 pm et first pitch. The game will not be televised, but the game can be heard on the Marlins Radio Network if you have an MLB.tv Premium subscription.
  • Noah Syndergaard is scheduled to make his second start of the season, against Marlins lefty Justin Nicolino. Also scheduled to pitch for the Mets include, LHP Antonio Bastardo, LHP Jerry Blevins, RHP Jeurys Familia, RHP Jim Henderson, RHP Addison Reed, LHP Sean Gilmartin, and RHP Logan Verrett.

The Mets defeated the Detroit Tigers at Tradition Field this afternoon by the final score of 7 to 3. A full box score recap is provided at the link below…

Game Notes:

  • Lucas Duda had a day at the plate going 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBI.
  • Neil Walker (pictured) hit his first home run in a Mets uniform with a solo shot in the bottom half of the fourth.
  • Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-3 this afternoon with a 2-run single in the bottom of the third.
  • Yoenis Cespedes had his second RBI of the spring with his RBI single in the bottom of the third.
  • Bartolo Colon pitched 3 innings allowing 4 hits on 1 ER and 2 K’s.
  • Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect frame with 2 K’s.

The Mets got a lot of help today from their projected starters offensively. Lucas Duda swung the bat exceptionally well, as his lone out was also hit very hard. It was nice to see Neil Walker get his first home run in a Mets uniform this spring when he belted a shot to right field in the bottom of the 4th. Both Duda and Walker’s current batting average’s sit at .375. Bartolo Colon had a tough first inning as he allowed a leadoff triple to Anthony Gose and an RBI single shortly after to Casey McGehee. He was pitching from the stretch the rest of the inning but seemed to get it under control as the inning wore on. After laboring through the first inning Colon seemed to find his grove and pitched a solid 2 innings thereafter. Wilmer Flores made some nice plays defensively at third base this afternoon, and I believe he is comfortable enough at that position to ease everyone’s worries. Watching Jeurys Familia pitch is such a thing of beauty. He is so smooth with his mechanics and he looked untouchable this afternoon with the way he was pitching. With a better bullpen to bridge the gap this season, it would not shock me if Familia approached 50 saves.

Mike Pelfrey returns to face Mets

mike-pelfrey-mlb-spring-training-detroit-tigers-new-york-yankees-850x560.jpg

Former Met and first round draft pick of the 2005 MLB Draft, Mike Pelfrey will return to Tradition Field this Monday to face the Mets in his second spring start of the season. Pelfrey signed a 2-year, $16 million dollar deal this offseason with the Tigers. Pelfrey has not faced the Mets since he was not retained after the 2011 season. Pelfrey will have another chance when the games matter to face his former team, when the Mets make a trip to Detroit August 5-7.
