METS-MARLINS NOTES: The Mets have won 10 of their last 16 games in Miami…New York is 23-18 vs. the Marlins since 2014.

AFTER AN OFF DAY: The Mets 7-0 after an off day this year and have scored an average of 6.0 runs in those seven wins.

LOCK DOWN NINTH: Jeurys Famila has 17 saves, tied for the most in the majors… Is 17-17 in save opportunities in 2016…Familia has saved 33 consecutive games in the regular season dating to August 1, 2015, extending a franchise-record…It is the second-longest active streak in the major leagues (Arizona’s Brad Ziegler has saved 38 straight opportunities)…His 17 consecutive saves to open the season is the second-longest streak to open a season in franchise history, breaking a tie with Francisco Rodriguez in 2009.

FLAMETHROWER: According to FanGraphs, Syndergaard averages the fastest fastball (98.1), slider (91.6) and change-up (90.0) this year.

STREAKING: Noah Syndergaard has not allowed an earned run in his last 21.1 innings dating to May 11.

SYNDERGAARD VS. MIAMI: Started against Miami for the first time on April 12…Faced José Fernandez in the matchup and went 7.0 innings, giving up one run, earned, on seven hits…Struck out a season-high 12 batters and walked one.

WELCOME TO MIAMI: Yoenis Cespedes has hit .364 (18-44) with three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI in nine career games at Marlins Park.

DYNAMIC DUO: Yoenis Cespedes (15) and Neil Walker (13) lead the Mets in home runs…This is the second time in team history, the Mets had two players with at least 13 homers by the end of May…Also accomplished in 2006 (Carlos Delgado-15 and Carlos Beltran-14).

METS VS. KOEHLER: Tom Koehler has made 17 appearances (14 starts) against the Mets and holds a 2-5 record with a 4.14 ERA…He has struck out 65 and walked 40 in 87 career innings…Notable Mets career numbers against Koehler are provided below…

  • Yoenis Cespedes: .375 (3-8), 2 2B, 1 3B

  • Wilmer Flores: .273 (3-11), 2 2B, 1 RBI
  • Curtis Granderson: .227 (5-22), 1 RBI

David Wright out for “extended period” (UPDATE: Wright out 6-8 weeks)

image

(UPDATE: 6/3/16: 11:20 AM): The New York Mets have announced that David Wright has been placed on the disabled list and will not participate in baseball activities for 6-8 weeks. Wright will have to undergo physiotherapy to protect the area after the 6-8 week timetable, which likely sets any potential return back until August. It’s an even worse timetable for the Mets than originally reported last night. The Mets have indeed recalled infielder Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Las Vegas but the starting job is going to go to Wilmer Flores it would appear. At this point I would not be shocked if Sandy Alderson started exploring external options.

Steven Matz named NL Rookie of the Month

steven_matz

Left-handed pitcher Steven Matz was named National League Rookie of the Month for the month of May. Matz went 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA in five starts during May. Matz struck out 31 batters in 34.1 innings and only walked four batters. He is the third player in Mets history to receive the award since it’s inception in 2011, joining former Met Justin Turner and two-time winner and current Met Jacob deGrom who has won the award twice.

Steven Matz has quietly emerged as an ace in his own right in the Mets rotation, as he holds a 7-1 record with a 2.60 ERA this season. Congratulations to Steven and let’s hope he can bring home the NL Rookie of the Year trophy to New York at the end of the season!

Game Notes:

  • Bartolo Colon pitched a solid game tonight going 6 innings while allowing only 2 runs on 7 hits. He struck out 3 and only walked 1 batter.
  • Curtis Granderson was 2-4 with a double and an RBI triple to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th.
  • Asdrubal Cabrera was 1-4 with a solo HR.
  • Jeurys Familia was hung with the loss tonight giving up a bases loaded 2-run single in the top of the 9th.

It has been a rough couple days for us Mets fans. Last night was a complete disaster and tonight was a heartbreaker, after the Mets rallied in the bottom of the eighth on a Curtis Granderson RBI triple off of Dodgers reliever Mike Liberatore, to tie the game. Jeurys Familia has not looked himself at all in his last two outings, both coming against the Dodgers. Tonight in the top of the ninth, Familia loaded the bases, and then allowed a two run RBI single to Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. It would probably be in Familia’s best interest to take a day or two off as he almost cost the Mets a victory on Friday but ultimately cost them one tonight. I believe fatigue could be the factor as Familia has seen his ERA rise to 4.07 with tonight’s outing. However despite the loss, I loved the Mets fight tonight as they immediately took advantage of the Dodgers pulling Kershaw out of the game and tied it up. With tonight’s loss the Mets drop a game out of first place behind the Washington Nationals.

The Mets will have to put this game in the back of their mind as quickly as possible as they have a matinee game tomorrow afternoon against the Chicago White Sox. The Mets will unpleasantly welcome another Mets killer to Citi Field, as White Sox shortstop Jimmy Rollins will make his 2016 Citi Field debut at some point in this series. With Rollins great career numbers against the Mets, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least bit if he starts all three ball games.  It appears we also won’t see recently acquired James Loney until Tuesday as the Mets will face a left-handed pitcher tomorrow afternoon. The White Sox who had been on top of the AL Central Division for the majority of the season have been struggling recently falling out of first place, and this would be a great series for the Mets to get back on track against a struggling ball club.

  • The Mets and White Sox open their three game series at Citi Field tomorrow with a Memorial Day matinee, with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 pm et. You can watch tomorrow’s game on SNY and ESPN.
  • Matt Harvey (3-7, 6.08 ERA) who threw a one-hit shutout against the White Sox back in 2013 will face southpaw Jose Quintana (5-4, 2.22 ERA) who first signed with the Mets as an international free agent out of Colombia back in 2006.

Mets Acquire James Loney

james-loney

The New York Mets acquired first baseman James Loney this afternoon from the San Diego Padres in exchange for cash considerations. Mets GM Sandy Alderson stated that the 32-year old first baseman is expected to be with the team by Monday. Loney also is expected to be in a platoon role at first base and mainly facing right-handed pitching. He had been in Triple-A with the San Diego Padres organization since the beginning of the season, after his surprise release from the Tampa Bay Rays, and was hitting .342 with two home runs and 28 RBI’s in 43 games.

Loney will not replace Duda’s power as that is not they type of hitter he is, but he offers the Mets a veteran player who plays a good defensive first base and is a solid contact hitter. The Mets have been scouting Loney for the past couple of days and they must’ve come away liking what they had seen from the first baseman. Wilmer Flores is supposed to be activated off the disabled list by tomorrow which means he more than likely will be Loney’s platoon partner at first.

Manager Terry Collins was very enthusiastic about Loney’s acquisition.”He’ll add a nice dimension to us,” said Collins. “He’s a very good first baseman. He’s a good offensive player. He’s not necessarily a big power guy. I’ve known him since he was 17. He’s a tremendous guy in the clubhouse.”

This was a solid move that did not cost the Mets much at all. The Mets needed a viable replacement for Duda and I believe they found one in James Loney. Loney is a career .285/.338/.411 hitter over ten seasons in the majors with the Dodgers, Red Sox, and Rays.
