In Mets latest blow deGrom is done for season

598596740The New York Mets announced prior to tonight’s contest against the Minnesota Twins that starting pitcher Jacob deGrom will not make tomorrow’s scheduled start, and he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. DeGrom is a candidate to undergo surgery to correct an unlnar nerve in his right elbow.

It’s a big blow to the Mets rotation as the team was expecting deGrom back tomorrow, and he was expected to be relied upon as a big part of the Mets postseason push. DeGrom has not pitched since September 1st due to issues with his forearm/elbow. Now the Mets are left with more questions than answers in regards to how their rotation will hold up for the rest of the season, and possibly postseason. Both Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman have filled in admirably, and they will now be relied upon to fill a much larger role than initially expected as the Mets have their eyes set on the postseason.

The good news is that deGrom will be expected to be ready for Spring Training next season, and that he doesn’t have any ligament damage in his throwing arm. The Mets will now hope that Steven Matz, who is attempting to make his way back to the rotation, can help provide the rotation with stability down the stretch. It’s a fair question to wonder if the 216 combined innings last season played a part in deGrom’s uneven season. Regardless you can’t forecast injuries and this season the Mets have just been decimated by them.

Right-hander Gabriel Ynoa will make the start tomorrow afternoon against the Twins in deGrom’s place.

Final Recap: Mets 3 – Braves 2

Mets-Braves-Baseball11-1747x1254.jpeg

The New York Mets (10-7) defeated the Atlanta Braves (4-14) this afternoon by the final of 3-2 at Turner Field. For a full boxscore recap follow the link below…

Game Notes:

  • In his return to the rotation Jacob deGrom picked up his second win of the season as he pitched 5.2 innings while only allowing 1 run on 8 hits. DeGrom did not allow a walk and struck out 3.
  • Michael Conforto went 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI’s.
  • Curtis Granderson was 1-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored.
  • Lucas Duda was 1-3 with an RBI.
  • Asdrubal Cabrera was 2-4 with a run scored.
  • Jeurys Familia picked up his 5th save of the season despite pitching a shaky 9th inning where he allowed a run.

The Mets head back to New York with a tremendous amount of momentum after this successful road trip. The Mets completed their first sweep of the season against the Braves this weekend, and finished their nine-game road trip 7-2. The Mets won all three series on this trip and were a few hairs short of having an undefeated road trip. It’s a remarkable road trip in the sense that there were more questions than games played surrounding this Mets ball club, during their last homestand. The team looked relaxed on the road over the past week and moving Michael Conforto to the three-hole looks to have made this offense dynamic. Conforto hit .324 (11-34) with two home runs, seven RBI’s, and four doubles since being moved to the three spot at the beginning of this trip.

DeGrom threw only 82 pitches this afternoon as he hasn’t pitched in a game since April 8th. However he made the most of his opportunities, doing enough to keep the Mets in a tightly played ball game for most of the afternoon. His velocity hovered around 93 mph but he still had a knack for getting hitters out this afternoon. I still strongly believe we will see his velocity back up around 95 mph as the season goes on. All in all it was great to see him on the mound today after dealing with the lat injury and his son’s birth complications over the past couple of weeks.

The Mets have now won seven games in a row dating back to last season at Turner Field which is a franchise record. They have never won that many games at Turner Field previously, but they have tied a franchise record of seven straight victories in Atlanta dating back to the 1985-1986 seasons when the Braves played at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.   Considering the amount of trouble the Mets have had in the past at Turner Field it’s nice to see them having success in Atlanta for a change. The Mets now return home for a nine-game home stand that begins tomorrow evening against the Cincinnati Reds.

  • The Mets return home tomorrow to face the Cincinnati Reds with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm et. Tomorrow night’s game can be seen on SNY.
  • Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 0.90 ERA) will take the hill for the Mets opposing Cuban right-hander Raisel Iglesias (1-1, 3.09 ERA)

Mets Tidbits

r960-2560f7c559765b3e96d8749631371515.jpg

  • It has been announced today that Jacob deGrom will rejoin the rotation this weekend and start Sunday’s afternoon game in Atlanta against the Braves. DeGrom has been out since April 8th due to a right lat injury and his son’s Jaxon’s birth. He threw a 71-pitch simulated game in Port St. Lucie yesterday and he appears ready to go. DeGrom will throw one more bullpen session in Port St. Lucie on Friday and join his teammates in Atlanta on Saturday, which is the deadline for him to be activated off the emergency list. Rafael Montero is expected to be optioned back to AAA Las Vegas as soon as deGrom is activated.
  • Logan Verrett who has made two starts in place of Jacob deGrom, has more than proved his value to the Mets as both a spot-starter and as a reliever in the Mets bullpen.Verrett is 2-0 with an 0.69 ERA this season and he also has a 2.36 ERA in six career starts for the Mets. Verrett is also holding opposing left handed hitters to a .190 opponent batting average and righties to a .179 batting average since returning to the Mets last season. Manager Terry Collins talked about Verrett’s role on the team and was more than satisfied stating,”We know there’s going to be a day when somebody is going to show up sick who is supposed to pitch. Hopefully, this guy is rested enough. If you need somebody, he can step in and do the job.”
  • While the Mets bats have begun to catch up with the starting pitching the Mets bullpen has done a great job despite numerous questions by outsiders coming into the season. The pen has stranded 17 of 20 inherited runners and retired 34 of 42 first batters faced so far this season. The Mets bullpen’s 3.18 ERA is the fourth lowest in the National League and the pitchers have issued 14 walks while striking out 49 over 39.2 innings. Collectively this group has done a great job and as the season goes on you can only hope they don’t get overworked and can keep building confidence from the strong first month. Don’t forget Josh Edgin is only a couple of weeks away from rejoining this team which will only make them stronger.
  • Speaking of Josh Edgin, his rehab assignment seems to be going great as he threw a scoreless inning of relief last night for the St. Lucie Mets. In his last three rehab appearances for the St. Lucie Mets, Edgin has thrown 2.1 scoreless innings while only allowing one hit, striking out three, and walking none. Edgin who is recovering from Tommy John surgery is scheduled to come off the disabled list on May 1st.
  • With the Atlanta Braves scheduled to open a new ballpark next season, the New York Mets will make their first of three final trips this season to Turner Field on Friday. The Mets have an all-time record of 60-103 in 163 regular season contests. The Mets are also 0-3  in the postseason at Turner Field, back when the Mets made their lone postseason appearance at the stadium in 1999. Turner Field has always been known as a house of horrors for the Mets since it’s opening in 1997 and I’m sure the Mets won’t miss it at all next season.

DeGrom throws simulated game; Son Jaxon goes home.

hc-mets-cubs-nlcs-1020-20151019-001.jpeg

Jacob deGrom threw a 71-pitch simulated game this afternoon in Port St. Lucie and appears ready to rejoin the Mets rotation. DeGrom’s week old son was also discharged from the hospital yesterday which is fantastic news! DeGrom has not pitched since April 8th due to a sore right lat, and also because of the birth of his son Jaxon. DeGrom is projected to rejoin the rotation either this weekend in Atlanta or the following series in New York against the Cincinnati Reds.

Jacob deGrom placed on family emergency leave; son’s condition improving. UPDATE (3:42 pm ct): DeGrom and wife expected to take son home tomorrow.

jacob-degrom.jpg

Jacob deGrom was placed yesterday afternoon on the family emergency list, after his newborn son was having health complications. Placing deGrom on the emergency list would allow him to be away from the team for 3-7 days while he could be with his family during this difficult time.  Continue reading

Mets Tidbits

  • Jacob deGrom who has been dealing with a right lat injury threw a 25-pitch bullpen session this afternoon in Port St. Lucie instead of flying to Cleveland as originally expected. DeGrom is expected to throw one more bullpen session on Sunday with more intensity, and then a decision will be made if deGrom can make his next start or if he will be placed on the disabled list. DeGrom has also undergone an MRI on his right lat. If deGrom is cleared to start he will make his next start sometime next week against the Phillies. If he his placed on the disabled list his stint will be backdated to April 9th making him eligible to come off the DL on April 24th.
  • Yoenis Cespedes is making his first start as a DH this season for the Mets as his legs are still sore from Wednesday’s dive into the stands on a foul ball.
  • Every major league manager, coach and player will #42 today to commemorate the 69th Anniversary of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947. Major League Baseball retired Robinson’s number throughout the Majors in 1997, dedicating April 15th as Jackie Robinson Day each year since 2004, and requesting that every player and all on-field personnel wear his Number 42 during games scheduled on Jackie Robinson Day since 2009. One ‘#42’ jersey will be signed by each member of every team and auctioned-off on MLB.com (MLB. com/42jersey), with the proceeds benefiting the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

DeGrom to attempt to throw side session Friday

jacob-degrom

Mets Manager Terry Collins has stated that Jacob DeGrom will meet his teammates on Friday in Cleveland following the birth of his newborn son on Monday night, and attempt to throw a side session. If deGrom is able to complete his side session with no issues he will rejoin the rotation and start next week in Philadelphia. However if his right lat is still an issue and he can’t complete the bullpen session, the Mets will place deGrom on the disabled list and he will be backdated to April 9th. Logan Verrett will most likely continue to assume deGrom’s rotation spot in the event that deGrom is not healthy enough to pitch.
