Things to Know: Diamondbacks vs. Mets
The New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks will do battle for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night at Citi Field. I highlighted some things below to check out before play gets underway!
The next nine need to be played to the nines.
The Mets were able to salvage a game in Detroit yesterday after Neil Walker took Francisco Rodriguez deep in the top of the ninth inning, to give the Mets a much needed 3-1 win after Saturday night’s gut-wrenching defeat. The Mets will now turn the page on Tuesday night and open a six game homestand against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres. They follow this upcoming homestand with a ten-game road trip that begins on the West Coast. While the Mets will make trips to San Francisco and St. Louis there is a silver lining. That trip also begins with the Mets playing the Arizona Diamondbacks for three games beginning next Monday. If there ever was a time for the Mets to take advantage of their schedule it is now. Zack Wheeler is officially pitching again!
Last night right-hander Zack Wheeler pitched in his first rehab game since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. The 26-year old pitcher threw only 17 pitches for the St. Lucie Mets as his start was cut short due to a rain delay. Wheeler allowed an unearned run as well as a walk in his lone inning of work. He also was reportedly hitting 90-96 mph last night which is an encouraging sign as well as he works his way back to the Mets rotation.
Wheeler will make another start sometime this upcoming week, and he is on track to join the Mets rotation during the first week of September at the latest. The Mets could certainly use Wheeler’s presence in the rotation, as the Mets are currently internally discussing whether to boot Logan Verrett from the rotation after his disappointing start last night. Since Verrett has taken over for the injured Matt Harvey in the Mets rotation he has posted a 5.61 ERA in six starts. It is unclear as of right now who would replace Verrett in the rotation, but that spot will certainly go to Wheeler when he is ready to be activated by the end of the month.

It has been 30 days since the Mets last posted back-to-back wins. The team has been alternating wins and losses, as well as stringing together multiple losses in a row over that span of time.
