Things to Know: Diamondbacks vs. Mets


The New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks will do battle for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night at Citi Field. I highlighted some things below to check out before play gets underway!

  • As of Monday the Mets sit two games behind the Miami Marlins for the final Wild Card spot, and are nine games behind the Nationals in the NL East.
  • The Arizona Diamondbacks have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season after making multiple big splashes this past offseason. They are 45-66 and last in the NL West.
  • In 7 games played last season against the Diamondbacks the Mets went 5-2, including a three game sweep at Citi Field.
  • The Mets have not posted back-to-back wins in over 30 days.
  • The Mets acquired dominant reliever Addison Reed (pictured) from the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 30th of last season for right-handed pitchers Miller Diaz and Matt Koch. Koch is currently ranked as the Diamondbacks 20th best prospect by
  • Wednesday night Mets starter Bartolo Colon has never beaten the Arizona¬†Diamondbacks, which is the only team he has never beaten in his 19-year career. He has produced at least one win against all 29 other clubs, including the Mets.
  • Thursday afternoon starter Noah Syndergaard spun 8 innings of one-run ball against the Diamondbacks on July 10th of last season. He only allowed 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out a career high 13 batters.
  • Mets second baseman Neil Walker has been on an absolute tear over the past 14 days hitting .442 (23-52) with 3 home runs and 9 RBI’s.
  • Mets first baseman James Loney has been a thorn in the Diamondbacks side hitting .317 with 10 HR’s and 47 RBI’s in 98 games played against them. The HR’s and RBI’s are the second most in his career against any opponent.
  • Mets outfielder Jay Bruce currently is second in the NL in both HR’s and RBI’s with 27 HR’s and 84 RBI’s.
  • Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zack Greinke will be making his return to the mound Tuesday night against the New York Mets. Greinke has been on the disabled list since July 3rd with a left oblique injury. Greinke also signed a monster contract with the Diamondbacks in the offseason for six years and $206 million. He owns a 1.42 ERA in three starts at Citi Field.
  • Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas has been red hot over the last 14 days hitting .382 (21-55) with 8 home runs and 14 RBI’s.
  • Diamondbacks slugger Paul Goldschmidt has produced a .170 career average at Citi Field, which is his lowest at any NL ballpark. He is hitting .293 this season with 17 HR’s and 70 RBI’s this season.
  • Diamondbacks third baseman Jake Lamb is having a breakout season hitting .287 with 24 HR’s and 72 RBI.
  • Diamondbacks infielder Jean Segura who is currently hitting .309 has hit a lowly .185 against the Mets in his career. It’s his lowest average against any NL opponent.
  • After making a blockbuster trade in the offseason with the Atlanta Braves for right-hander Shelby Miller, the 25-year old starting pitcher struggled to a tune of a 2-9 record with a 7.14 ERA. He was sent to AAA on July 14th.
  • The Mets will face the Diamondbacks current number one prospect on Thursday afternoon in starting pitcher Braden Shipley. The 24-year old right-hander has produced a 1-1 record with a 4.15 ERA in three starts this season.
