Final Recap: Marlins 2 – Mets 1
The Miami Marlins (3-3) defeated the New York Mets (2-5) this evening by the final score of 2-1. For a full boxscore recap follow the link below…
Game notes:
- Noah Syndergaard was absolutely dominant tonight pitching 7 innings and striking out 12. He only allowed 1 run on 7 hits with 1 walk.
- Lucas Duda drove in the Mets only run tonight with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st.
- Curtis Granderson was 1-3 with a double and a run scored. He also struck out twice. Granderson is hitting a paltry .074 thus far.
- Jim Henderson was charged with the Marlins go-ahead run in the top of the 8th. Jerry Blevins relieved Henderson after he loaded the bases, and Martin Prado drove in the game deciding run on a sacrifice fly off Blevins.
- The Mets left 7 on-base tonight and were 1 for 5 with runners in scoring position.
- Noah Syndergaard’s 21 K’s are tied for most through 2 outings to start a season. He is tied with Pedro Martinez and Dwight Gooden.
- Rafael Montero was activated immediately after the game and Eric Campbell was demoted to AAA according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.
It was more of the same story tonight as it has been over the past four nights with the Mets, as the bats again fell silent. Granted the Mets were facing one of the best pitchers in baseball, in Jose Fernandez but they had him on the ropes early on in the game. However the Mets could not convert those opportunities into runs, as they only scored one off of him tonight. Noah Syndergaard was absolutely filthy tonight as he carved through the Marlins lineup tonight with ease. It’s a shame that Syndergaard did not get the win but I’m expecting he’ll have a few more performances like tonight’s later on this season. The Mets have a quick turnaround with a game tomorrow afternoon so hopefully the players aren’t too down on themselves, and they can salvage at least one game of this series and avoid the sweep.
- The Mets will look to avoid a sweep as they play the Marlins in the series finale tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 pm et. The game can be seen on SNY and MLB Network.
- Logan Verrett (0-0, 9.00 ERA) will get the nod tomorrow afternoon in place of Jacob deGrom for the Mets. Verrett will oppose Marlins lefty Adam Conley (0-0, 27.00 ERA). Conley is the first southpaw the Mets will have faced this season.

Montero recalled from AAA
ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin broke news this afternoon that the Mets are recalling Rafael Montero from AAA Las Vegas today to help out the Mets overworked bullpen. I among many, expected the Mets to recall Sean Gilmartin, but Gilmartin has not pitched in 11 days since the Mets last Spring Training game against the Cubs. Gilmartin is scheduled to start tonight for AAA Las Vegas.
A corresponding move has not been announced but certainly surrounds Jacob deGrom. The Mets have the option to place deGrom on paternity leave or place him on the 15-day DL. If he is placed on paternity leave and is still unhealthy to pitch, deGrom will not be credited for missing tommrrow’s start. DeGrom will have to wait a full 15 days before he can pitch again, unless he is placed on the DL today then his stint will be backdated and can return on April 24th. Rubin had also speculated that there is an outside chance Hansel Robles gets demoted to AAA after throwing 52 pitches last night, as he certainly will be unavailable for a few games.
Montero will provide depth for the Mets in the bullpen as long-reliever Logan Verrett is scheduled to start against the Marlins tomorrow afternoon in place of deGrom. Montero was Las Vegas’s Opening Day starter last Thursday, and the 25-year old threw five innings of one run ball, allowing three hits, walking two, and striking out five.
UPDATE (3:52 pm ct): Mets beat reporter Anthony DiComo is reporting that Montero will not be active tonight and is simply on the taxi squad. The Mets are taking a gamble, but they possibly could use Logan Verrett in relief tonight if Syndergaard has a short outing, and use Montero to start tomorrow afternoon’s game.

Game Notes:
- Steven Matz was rocked for 7 runs on 6 hits in 1.2 innings pitched tonight. Matz also walked 2 and only struck out 1.
- Hansel Robles followed Matz in relief pitching 2.1 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
- Antonio Bastardo pitched 1.1 innings and his lone mistake came off the bat of Marcell Ozuna for a 2-run homer. He allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2.
- Addison Reed, Jeurys Familia, and Jerry Blevins pitched 3.2 scoreless innings.
- David Wright was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
- Yoenis Cespedes was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Curtis Granderson is now 1-24 to start the season after going 0-4.
- Matz’s outing was the shortest outing by a Mets starting pitcher since Jon Niese on July 4, 2014 against the Texas Rangers.
“Well that escalated quickly,” as the infamous Ron Burgundy would say. This game was simply ugly any way you spin it. Last season the Mets were used to beating on teams in the NL East and the tables have now been turned on them to begin the season, after suffering brutal losses the last three days to the Phillies and Marlins. The Mets certainly had their opportunities to inch back into the game but left eight runners on base, and were 1-7 tonight with runners in scoring position. The Mets hitters collectively need to find a way to get out of the mini-slump they are in at the plate. The slate does not get any easier for the offense as they face Marlins ace Jose Fernandez tomorrow night, and they travel to face the Cleveland Indians this weekend who arguably have the best pitching staff in the American League. Many of these guys are veterans so they are bound to figure it out eventually but lets not wait too much longer please.
The Mets haven’t had a bad pitching performance yet this season, but it couldn’t have come at worse time with Jacob deGrom leaving to Florida this afternoon to be with his wife and newborn baby. With deGrom gone, Logan Verrett is already expected to make Wednesday’s start in place of deGrom due to his lat injury, which made him unavailable to pitch tonight. Due to those circumstances the bullpen was overworked tonight, and they still have two more games before an off-day Thursday. The only logical option at this point is to place deGrom on paternity leave and recall Sean Gilmartin for bullpen depth. Unfortunately if this move is made deGrom will have to serve a full 15 day DL stint if his right lat has not improved upon return, and he and will not get time served for sitting out his next start. It’s tough to fault Matz for tonight’s start as he is still a rookie and he had not pitched in ten days. Hopefully Matz comes back better on regular rest and his confidence isn’t shaken after tonight’s rough outing. In his last start back on March 31st he did no-hit the Cubs over five innings which displayed the kind of pitcher he can be when he is on his game. Ugly loss with a capital U, and I doubt the Mets continue down this path for too much longer, the same way I doubt Daniel Murphy continuing to hit .471 this season. Hopefully we can get back in the win column tomorrow night in what is sure to be a pitching duel.
- The Mets play the Marlins in the second game of their three game series tomorrow evening with first pitch slated for 7:10 pm et. Tomorrow night’s game can be seen on SNY.

Josh Edgin begins rehab assignment.
Left-handed reliever Josh Edgin made a significant step in his return from last year’s Tommy John operation by making his first rehab appearance with the St. Lucie Mets yesterday and recording two outs.
Edgin had allowed one run on one hit, with a strikeout, and a walk. The results don’t matter as much as Edgin proving he is healthy, and that he could get his velocity up to the mid-90’s again. Edgin is expected back with the ball club on May 1st, which leaves him pitching on a rehab assignment for the next three weeks.
Edgin would be a valuable asset to the Mets bullpen if he is healthy and able to regain his velocity. In 2014 Edgin had posted a 1.32 ERA in 47 relief appearances, and was beginning to emerge as one of the Mets most reliable relievers in their bullpen.

- Matt Harvey was charged with the loss this afternoon. Harvey pitched 6 innings, while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Harvey walked 2 and struck out 3.
- Yoenis Cespedes was 2-4 with a 2-run home run.
- David Wright was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
- Jim Henderson pitched a perfect 7th inning, striking out the side.
- The Mets only had 4 hits this afternoon.
- The Phillies surpassed their win total at Citi Field from last year, with today’s victory. Last year at Citi Field the Phillies were 1-8, this season they are now 2-1.
It was a real struggle again this afternoon with the Mets bats going mostly silent. Yoenis Cespedes hit a 2-run bomb in the bottom of the 6th to cut the Phillies lead to 3-2, but that would be the only offense the Mets would muster this afternoon. It’s tough to point out exactly what is wrong with the Mets offense, as collectively they came into the game with the league’s 28th ranked batting average. It is a major contrast to the pitching, as they came into today with the best team ERA in the Majors at 1.29. The only place I could start to look at would be Curtis Granderson at the top of the lineup starting the season 1-20. If Granderson is not getting on base it will be tough for the Mets to manufacture runs, as he was an on-base machine last year. To Granderson’s credit he had some hard hit balls this afternoon, so maybe he’s on the verge of turning his bad fortunes around. Harvey had another uneven start with his biggest mistake coming in the top of the 6th when he allowed a 2-run home run to Odubel Herrera. Harvey has innings where he looks crisp and the ball is coming out nicely, and other innings where he has been running into trouble with elevated pitch counts. However this was a much better start than his Opening Night start against the Royals. There is plenty of time for Harvey to right the ship, and get back on track to his dominant self as I predicted him as my Cy Young award winner this season.
- The Mets return to action tomorrow night when the Miami Marlins come to Citi Field for a 3-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm et. Tomorrow’s game can be seen on SNY and ESPN.
- Rookie Steven Matz (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first start of the 2016 season against Marlins right-hander Jared Cosart (0-0, 0.00 ERA) who will be making his 2016 debut as well.
Jacob deGrom to miss next start.
It was announced this morning that Jacob deGrom will be scratched from his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the Marlins. Manager Terry Collins stated that deGrom’s right lat has “improved, but not enough.” It seems the Mets will take a day-to- day approach with deGrom before they consider placing him on the disabled list.
Right-hander Logan Verrett will start in deGrom’s place on Wednesday.

- Bartolo Colon pitched 6 solid innings with his lone mistake coming on a Ryan Howard home run in the bottom of the 5th. He allowed 5 hits, allowed no walks, and struck out 7. Colon also made a beautiful over the shoulder catch on a Freddy Galvis bunt attempt in the top of the 6th inning.
- Asdrubal Cabrera was 2-3 with a double.
- Lucas Duda was 1-4 with a single.
- Hansel Robles, Antonio Bastardo, and Jeurys Familia combined for 3 scoreless innings.
- The Mets only had 3 hits tonight and were 0-5 with RISP.
- Ryan Howard now has 45 career home runs against the Mets, which is the most among all active players in baseball.
It was a pretty ho-hum night at a cold and wet Citi Field. The Mets were unable to get anything going on offense, despite the pitching doing a great job of keeping them in the game. Hopefully with better weather expected tomorrow, the Mets offense will come alive and put some runs on the board. I can’t believe Mets fans already are beginning to boo Yoenis Cespedes. Yes I understand he has started the season 2-12 at the plate, but lets not start those shenanigans this early on a proven commodity in Cespedes. I also provided the beautiful Willie Mays-esque catch that Colon made below, as it is the only Mets play worth highlighting tonight.
