Mets Injury Updates:
- Catcher Travis d’Arnaud tried throwing today for the first time since going on the DL, down at Port St. Lucie and reportedly felt discomfort. Ultimately the Mets shut d’Arnaud down and it is unknown when he will resume throwing. Manager Terry Collins reportedly found the news “very discouraging.” It can be noted that d’Arnaud did some hitting on Thursday, but he is still having trouble throwing the ball. We can only hope that this injury doesn’t keep him out for a longer period of time.
- Mets Assistant GM John Ricco has announced that left-handed reliever Josh Edgin will remain in the minors with AAA Las Vegas when his rehab stint expires on Monday. Edgin has pitched well in eight appearances between St. Lucie and Las Vegas posting a 1.42 ERA, however there is no room in the Mets vaunted bullpen currently which leaves Edgin without a role. Edgin still hold options which allows the Mets to make the move for him to stay down in Las Vegas. Manager Terry Collins spoke earlier in the week on Edgin stating he wanted to see Edgin pitch on back-to-back days, as well as see more velocity on Edgin’s fastball. The Mets have a league best 2.69 bullpen ERA, which allows Edgin as much time as possible to get back to pre-Tommy John Surgery form.

Game Notes:
- Noah Syndergaard was the victim of no run support pitching 6 innings, while only allowing 2 runs on 6 hits. Syndergaard walked 2 and struck out 5.
- Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-4 and had 2 of the Mets 3 hits tonight.
- Wilmer Flores was 1-3 with a double.
- Jim Henderson pitched a scoreless inning, striking out 2. His ERA currently sits at 0.93.
Well no matter how well the Mets are playing, when it comes to playing in San Diego this team can’t seem to find consistent success. The Mets have now dropped two games in a row to start their west coast road trip, with two more games left to play in the new house of horrors, which is otherwise known as Petco Park. The Padres have a 28-14 (.667) record at Petco Park against the Mets since the ballpark opened in 2003, which is their best mark against any team. If you look at it from a series standpoint, the Mets have won one series out of fourteen since the ballpark opened. That is not good at all, no matter how you slice it. This is certainly not how the Mets wanted to get their road trip started, especially against a Padres team that was barely keeping it’s head above water in the crowded NL West.
Noah Syndergaard pitched a good game tonight and only had two stolen bases charged against him, although one of those bases would be a deciding factor in tonight’s game. Padres second baseman Jemile Weeks stole second base in the bottom of the fifth, which allowed center fielder John Jay to drive him in on an RBI single, which resulted in a 2-0 score. Syndergaard rarely puts runners on base, but when he does they ultimately cost him, as runners are 29-32 in stealing bases on Thor in his career. It was a gritty performance by Thor however, as the Padres battled with him consistently all night, but he pitched a good game all things considered.
The Mets struggles against left-handed pitchers was evident tonight as Drew Pomeranz only allowed one hit through five innings pitched. The Mets have faced four left-handed starting pitchers so far this season and those pitchers hold a combined ERA of 1.16. Granted the Mets did not have Neil Walker or Michael Conforto in tonight’s lineup but it is an area the Mets will look to improve on as the season progresses. The Mets had one true scoring opportunity, but Asdrubal Cabrera would be thrown out by left fielder Melvin Upton Jr., trying to score from first base with one out, on a Wilmer Flores double in the bottom of the 7th. The Mets also made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth bringing the tying and go-ahead run’s to the plate but could not muster anything off Padres closer Fernando Rodney. We can’t get out of San Diego soon enough.
- The Mets will look to salvage a split of the series in San Diego beginning tomorrow night after their six series winning streak was snapped tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 8:40 pm et, and you can catch tomorrow night’s game on WPIX and MLB Network.
- Bartolo Colon (2-1, 2.56 ERA) will look to reverse the Mets fortunes tomorrow night against Padres right-hander James Shields (1-4, 3.23 ERA).

Game Notes:
- Steven Matz was in complete command this afternoon picking up his 4th win of the season. Matz pitched 7.2 scoreless innings while only allowing 2 hits. Matz walked none and struck out 8.
- Rene Rivera was 1-4 slugging his first home run as a Met. It was a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 2nd.
- Asdrubal Cabrera was 1-4 with a 2-run homer.
- Lucas Duda had a monster day going 2-4 with 2 HR’s. Duda hit a 2-run bomb in the bottom of the 3rd and a solo HR in the bottom of the 5th.
- Wilmer Flores was 2-3 with an RBI double.
After yesterday’s outing where the Mets were shutout and only mustered one hit, the offense came back alive today in a big way. The Mets slugged four home runs on the afternoon, with recent addition Rene Rivera joining the Mets recent home-run binge in the bottom of the second inning to start the scoring. The Mets offense, with the exception of last night, has become a force in the National League and they have forty home runs to show for it in their first twenty six games thus far, which is a club record. This offense is producing at a historic pace and one can only imagine how much more dangerous this lineup will be when it warms up in the summer and the ball starts flying.
Steven Matz continued his dominant run of starts since his 7-run shelling back in early April, as he completely dominated the Braves from start to finish today. The game looks like it has completely slowed down for Matz and he seems to just be improving with every start he makes this season. In Matz’s last four starts he is 4-0 with a 0.67 ERA. Those numbers indicate the ace potential Matz possesses, and there is no doubt he will be in the running to be named NL Rookie of the Year at the end of the season at this current pace.
The Mets completed a successful homestand where they went 7-2, and now have won six straight series for the first time since 2006. The Mets also hit as many home runs in this series against the Braves (7) than the Braves have hit all season (6), which just shows where the Braves are at in the middle of their rebuilding process. No apologies for taking care of business however as the Mets now are set to embark on their longest road trip of the season. The Mets will play eleven games in three west-coast cities with no off-days in-between. The Mets will play the Padres, Dodgers, and Rockies in that order, who are all beating up on each other in the crowded NL West. The Mets are 8-3 on the road this season and will look to build on that road success over the next week and a half.

Mets Tidbits
- Jacob deGrom will receive his 2015 Wilson Defensive Pitcher of the Year Award prior to tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves. DeGrom had a 1.000 fielding percentage last year and has not made an error in his major league career. The Award recognizes the top defensive player at each position by combining traditional defensive stats along with advanced metrics.
- Mets left-handed reliever Josh Edgin tossed a scoreless inning for Las Vegas (AAA) last night at El Paso. It was his first Triple-A outing since being promoted from St. Lucie (A+). Edgin is currently on a rehab assignment from his Tommy John operation last March. The 29-year old left hander’s 30-day rehab window expires on Monday, and the Mets will have to decide whether to promote him or option him to the minors. Edgin has allowed one run in 5.1 innings over seven rehabilitation games.
- New York hit three home runs in the first inning last night (David Wright, Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda) for the fourth time in team history. It was the first time that feat has been accomplished since April 13, 2006, when Carlos Beltran, Wright and Cliff Floyd when deep in the first inning at Washington. It was just the second time the Mets have hit three first inning homers at home (also: August 15, 1985).
- Former Mets and current Atlanta Braves players, Kelly Johnson and Eric O’Flaherty received their NL Championship rings prior to last night’s game at Citi Field. Mets COO Jeff Wilpon and Mets GM Sandy Alderson presented each player with their ring in the Atlanta clubhouse. It was a well deserved gesture for Johnson who helped energize this club to their 2015 postseason run, when he was acquired with Juan Uribe from the Braves last July. Eric O’Flaherty was acquired by the Mets in August from the Oakland Athletics but was not included on the postseason roster.
