Things to Know: Rockies vs. Mets


The New York Mets will host the Colorado Rockies for a four game series at Citi Field beginning Thursday afternoon. Here are a few things to know heading into the series.

  • The Mets will retire Mike Piazza’s #31 on Saturday, July 30 prior to the Mets-Rockies 7:10 p.m. game. The Mets have four other retired numbers (#37 for Casey Stengel, #14 for Gil Hodges, #41 for Tom Seaver and #42 retired by every team for Jackie Robinson).
  • Mike Piazza’s Baseball Hall of Fame plaque will be on display in the Mets Hall of Fame at Citi Field for Mets fans to see from July 29-31.
  • The Mets are 0-3 against the Colorado Rockies this season. The Mets went 7-0 against the Rockies last season.
  • The Mets have been outscored 16-9 against the Rockies this season.
  • If Jose Reyes is able to play at all (intercostal strain), this would be the first time he would face his former ballclub since they designated him for assignment back on June 15th. Reyes was originally acquired by the Rockies last July along with three other minor leaguers from the Toronto Blue Jays for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and pitcher LaTroy Hawkins.
  • Yoenis Cespedes has hit five home runs against the Rockies in 11 career games. It’s ¬†second among homers in his career against NL ballclubs in his career. Three of those home runs came at Coors Field on August 21 of last season in a 14-9 Mets victory.
  • James Loney has hit 15 career home runs against the Rockies, the most against any opponent in his career. He also carries 77 career RBI’s in his career against the Rockies the most against any opponent in his career.
  • Jacob deGrom is 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA ¬†in three career starts against Colorado and it is his second lowest ERA against any opponent with a minimum of three starts.
  • Bartolo Colon holds a career 9.45 ERA against the Rockies in four starts, his highest ERA against any opponent in baseball. All four of those starts however have come at Coors Field.
  • The Mets are third in all of baseball with a team ERA of 3.32, while the Rockies are 28th with a 4.87 ERA.
  • The Rockies have given up the fourth most earned runs in baseball with 482, while the Mets have given up the fewest in baseball with 327.
  • Former Mets reliever Gonzalez Germen is a current reliever for the Colorado Rockies. he has a 5.79 ERA in 37.1 innings pitched this season.
  • Rockies shortstop Trevor Story who unseated Jose Reyes is having a tremendous rookie season as he is hitting .272 with 27 home runs and 72 RBI’s. He has hit .455 (5-11) against the Mets this season.
  • In four career starts against the Mets Tyler Chatwood holds a 2-0 record with a 1.57 ERA.
  • The Rockies are fourth in Major League Baseball with a .268 team average. The Mets are last with a team average of .238.
  • The Rockies hold a NL leading .452 slugging percentage. The Mets are seventh in the NL with a .409 slugging percentage.
