Mets Tidbits
- Jacob deGrom will receive his 2015 Wilson Defensive Pitcher of the Year Award prior to tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves. DeGrom had a 1.000 fielding percentage last year and has not made an error in his major league career. The Award recognizes the top defensive player at each position by combining traditional defensive stats along with advanced metrics.
- Mets left-handed reliever Josh Edgin tossed a scoreless inning for Las Vegas (AAA) last night at El Paso. It was his first Triple-A outing since being promoted from St. Lucie (A+). Edgin is currently on a rehab assignment from his Tommy John operation last March. The 29-year old left hander’s 30-day rehab window expires on Monday, and the Mets will have to decide whether to promote him or option him to the minors. Edgin has allowed one run in 5.1 innings over seven rehabilitation games.
- New York hit three home runs in the first inning last night (David Wright, Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda) for the fourth time in team history. It was the first time that feat has been accomplished since April 13, 2006, when Carlos Beltran, Wright and Cliff Floyd when deep in the first inning at Washington. It was just the second time the Mets have hit three first inning homers at home (also: August 15, 1985).
- Former Mets and current Atlanta Braves players, Kelly Johnson and Eric O’Flaherty received their NL Championship rings prior to last night’s game at Citi Field. Mets COO Jeff Wilpon and Mets GM Sandy Alderson presented each player with their ring in the Atlanta clubhouse. It was a well deserved gesture for Johnson who helped energize this club to their 2015 postseason run, when he was acquired with Juan Uribe from the Braves last July. Eric O’Flaherty was acquired by the Mets in August from the Oakland Athletics but was not included on the postseason roster.

Game Notes:
- Bartolo Colon was dominant this evening pitching 8 innings of shutout ball only allowing 7 hits, walking none, and striking out 7.
- David Wright was 2-3 with a solo HR. He has now hit 36 career home runs against the Braves which is tied with the Phillies for his most against any opponent.
- Yoenis Cespedes was 1-4 with a 2-run HR.
- Lucas Duda was 1-3 with a solo HR, going back-to-back with Cespedes in the bottom of the 1st.
- Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth and allowed a run on 2 hits, while striking out 1.
Another dominant win for the Mets tonight over the Braves, as the offense flexed it’s muscles early with three home runs in the bottom of the first inning. After receiving the run support Bartolo Colon, was in a tough situation just once during the rest of the game which occurred in the bottom of the third with runners on first and second with two outs. Colon got A.J. Pierzynski to pop out to David Wright to end the threat, and Colon retired the next ten straight hitters. Congratulations to Colon on surpassing Pedro Martinez on the all-time Dominican pitcher’s win list, as he is now in sole position of second place with win number 220 tonight. Juan Marichal tops the list with 243 wins. I would have loved to see Colon come back and pitch the ninth as he was only at 99 pitches, and was on pace to break the Mets record for oldest pitcher to throw a shutout. Colon actually set the record last season on September 5th against the Marlins, and almost had the opportunity to break his own record. Either way Colon had a fantastic outing on a night he was able to reach a historic milestone.
Yoenis Cespedes also had a historic night as his home run tonight made him the fastest Mets player to hit 25 home runs in a Mets uniform. Cespedes accomplished that feat in 77 games, and the previous record holder was Carlos Delgado who did it in 88 games. It is an unbelievable transformation that Cespedes has contributed to this lineup, as this team has been on another level offensively since his acquisition last July. With the way Cespedes is swinging the bat he will make sure his name is thrown in the NL MVP race at the end of the season.
- The Mets will look to take their sixth straight series tomorrow evening in game two of their three game set against the Atlanta Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm et and can be seen on SNY.
- Matt Harvey who looks to be trending up will make the start for the Mets (2-3, 4.76 ERA) against Braves right-hander Matt Wisler (0-2, 4.26 ERA).

Game Notes:
- Noah Syndergaard pitched 5.2 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits. Syndergaard struck out 6 while walking 2.
- David Wright was 2-4 with an RBI single.
- Neil Walker was 2-4 with 2 base hits.
- Juan Lagares was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
- Yoenis Cespedes was 1-4 with a double.
Well all good things must come to an end right? The Mets were facing one of the top pitchers in baseball against Madison Bumgarner and simply could not execute offensively. That doesn’t go without saying that the Mets certainly had many opportunities this afternoon to claw back into this game. The Mets left twelve runners on base and were 1-8 with runners in scoring position. The Mets probably won’t want to face Bumgarner again at all this season, especially in the postseason as he now improves to 4-0 in his career against the Mets in five starts, and simply owns the Mets at Citi Field. Bumgarner holds a 0.62 ERA which is the lowest ERA at Citi Field among any pitcher with at least 25 innings pitched. Bumgarner has also thrown eighteen consecutive scoreless innings at Cit Field which is a record in the history of the ballpark.
Noah Syndergaard had a good but not great game this afternoon as he had to be almost perfect with the way Bumgarner was throwing today. Syndergaard had three stolen bases against him this afternoon, and if there has been one negative against Syndergaard it has been opposing base stealers. Ron Darling had noticed something with Syndergaard’s delivery that was allowing runners to run on him with ease, but would not disclose it on the broadcast. Hopefully this is something that may be shared to pitching coach Dan Warthen, or possibly something Warthen has noticed himself that he may be able to help correct. Time will tell, but Syndergaard’s throwing the ball so well right now you may not want to mess with his mechanics too much.
The Mets will welcome the Atlanta Braves to Citi Field next, and will look to start another win streak against the ball club it began one against last weekend. This is a crucial home series for the Mets to win, as they will hit the road for a long eleven game west coast road trip following Wednesday’s game, and this should be a team the Mets beat handily. This has been a great homestand thus far with the Mets going 5-1, and took a home series from the Giants for the first time in five seasons. The Mets will look to close out strong these last three games before going across the country for eleven days.
- The Mets and Atlanta Braves play the first game of their three game series tomorrow evening at Citi Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm et. The game will be televised on SNY.
- Bartolo Colon (1-1, 3.42 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets with the hope of passing Pedro Martinez for second place on the all-time Dominican-born pitchers wins list. The Braves have not announced a starter but it is expected that right-hander Matt Wisler (0-2, 4.26 ERA) will get the start against the Mets.

Game Notes:
- Yoenis Cespedes had an outstanding performance going 2-4 with 6 RBI’s, which included a grand slam.
- Michael Conforto was 2-5 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.
- Neil Walker was 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Asdrubal Cabrera was 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.
- Curtis Granderson was 1-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
- Steven Matz picked up his third win of the season, pitching 6 shutout innings while allowing 7 hits, walking 3, and striking out 4.

It just doesn’t get much better than that now does it Mets fans? The Mets absolutely clobbered Jake Peavy and Mike Broadway in the bottom of the third putting up a historic 12-spot on the scoreboard. I have seen the Mets criticized due to their style of play which is dependent on the home run ball, as well as the quality of the opposition they have faced thus far. Truth is, this team is not going to apologize to anyone for taking care of business, and they went out and absolutely beat down a quality opponent tonight. The Mets have notoriously struggled against the Giants and tonight’s game was a great indicator of a possible reversal of fortunes this series. The Mets have not won a series at home against the Giants since 2010, as they have lost five straight home series, and they will have two opportunities to change that this weekend.
Steven Matz also has pitched very strong since getting rocked for seven runs in his first outing of the season, where he only recorded five outs against the Marlins. In his last three starts since that outing, Matz is 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA, and is proving why he is a frontrunner for NL Rookie of the Year. The Mets have been absolutely rolling lately and have now won seven games in a row. Lets keep it going the rest of the weekend!
