Game Notes:
- Matt Harvey pitched his best game of the season pitching 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Harvey struck out 10 batters and walked 2. Harvey was also 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.
- Yoenis Cespedes was 2-4 with a solo HR.
- Asdrubal Cabrera was 2-5 with 2 RBI’s.
- Eric Campbell was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Jeurys Familia pitched a clean 9th inning and received his 10th save of the season.
There you have it folks, the Mets are now in first place in the NL East with this afternoon’s victory and the Nationals loss. Today’s game was by no means any easy as the Mets were able to squeeze themselves out of some tough situations. There was no situation bigger however than Antonio Bastardo bailing the Mets out of a bases loaded, no out scenario, in the bottom of the eighth inning unscathed. Bastardo was able to strike out Derek Norris, have Melvin Upton Jr. pop out to Lucas Duda, and strike out Alexei Ramirez in that order, to protect the Mets one run lead. The Mets bullpen has been as formidable as it has ever been in recent memory, and it played a huge part in today’s game to preserve the Mets lead. The Mets bullpen leads the league with a 2.53 ERA.
Matt Harvey looked as good as he has all season, as hit fastball was hitting 97 mph, and he seemed to be attacking hitters consistently this afternoon. Harvey ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, which has been his achilles heel all season, but he came out of the inning maintaining the lead. Harvey’s big mistake came on a 2-run home run allowed to catcher Christian Bethancourt, but he was bailed out of the inning by a throw that nailed Andrew Cashner at home plate trying to score on a Jon Jay double, to prevent further damage. All in all Harvey seems to righting the ship slowly every start, and today was the most electric we’ve seen him all season. Let’s hope today’s results translate to a big month of May for The Dark Knight.
The Mets are now scheduled to play in one of their most anticipated series of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This is a rematch of last year’s hard fought NLDS that went all five games. There is also the big question surrounding the Mets, as to whether they will retaliate towards Chase Utley after last year’s dirty slide that broke Ruben Tejada’s leg. The Mets are also scheduled to face three left-handed pitchers in this series, which includes Scott Kazmir, Alex Wood, and Clayton Kershaw. The Mets have had their fair share of struggles facing southpaws this season, so this series will definitely present a challenge to break out of that funk. It will be an exciting four game series with plenty of intrigue!

Game Notes:
- Bartolo Colon hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 2nd inning. He also pitched 6.2 innings while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 5 and only walked 1.
- Yoenis Cespedes was 1-3 with a 2-run HR.
- David Wright was 2-2 with a solo HR, and 3 walks.
- Michael Conforto was 1-4 with a solo HR and a walk.
- Kevin Plawecki was 2-3 with 2 doubles and a run scored.

Tonight’s ball game will not be remembered for anything else other than Bartolo Colon’s home run heard around the world. It was truly a special moment and I honestly couldn’t believe what I was witnessing as he rounded the bases. Colon made waves during the spring when went deep during pitchers batting practice and many were disappointed when there was no video evidence. Colon made sure there was video evidence tonight when he uncorked his 357 foot bomb to left field. With the home run, Colon became the oldest major leaguer to hit his first career home run at 42 years old and 349 days. Surprisingly Colon isn’t the oldest Met to ever hit a home run as that title belongs to the ageless Julio Franco, who did it back in May of 2007, at the age of 48. Oh yeah Colon did an admirable job on the mound as well, as his lone mistake came off the bat of Padres center fielder Jon Jay who hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third.
The Mets home run party continued tonight which obviously included Bartolo Colon. Yoenis Cespedes hit a two run bomb in the top of the first inning to give the Mets the early lead. Cespedes has been nothing short of spectacular since coming to the Mets. In 82 games since being acquired Cespedes has hit .288 with 22 home runs and 78 RBI’s. Those numbers would be good for the equivalent of half of a season, which are numbers many great players around the league put up in a full season. Also David Wright and Michael Conforto went back-to-back in the top of the 9th to put the Mets up comfortably by three runs. The Mets have hit six back-to-back home runs this season which leads the majors. 57% of the Mets runs have come by the long ball, which just goes to show how much the Mets are dependent on hitting home runs to win ball games.
Colon’s home run will go down as one of the greatest moments in Mets history, and I have provided a video of tonight’s moment below so you can relive it over and over again.
- The Mets will go for the split of the four game series in San Diego tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 4:40 pm et. You can watch tomorrow’s game on WPIX.
- Matt Harvey (2-4, 4.76 ERA) will get the start for the Mets opposing Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner (2-2, 4.85 ERA).
Mets Injury Updates:
- Catcher Travis d’Arnaud tried throwing today for the first time since going on the DL, down at Port St. Lucie and reportedly felt discomfort. Ultimately the Mets shut d’Arnaud down and it is unknown when he will resume throwing. Manager Terry Collins reportedly found the news “very discouraging.” It can be noted that d’Arnaud did some hitting on Thursday, but he is still having trouble throwing the ball. We can only hope that this injury doesn’t keep him out for a longer period of time.
- Mets Assistant GM John Ricco has announced that left-handed reliever Josh Edgin will remain in the minors with AAA Las Vegas when his rehab stint expires on Monday. Edgin has pitched well in eight appearances between St. Lucie and Las Vegas posting a 1.42 ERA, however there is no room in the Mets vaunted bullpen currently which leaves Edgin without a role. Edgin still hold options which allows the Mets to make the move for him to stay down in Las Vegas. Manager Terry Collins spoke earlier in the week on Edgin stating he wanted to see Edgin pitch on back-to-back days, as well as see more velocity on Edgin’s fastball. The Mets have a league best 2.69 bullpen ERA, which allows Edgin as much time as possible to get back to pre-Tommy John Surgery form.

Well no matter how well the Mets are playing, when it comes to playing in San Diego this team can’t seem to find consistent success. The Mets have now dropped two games in a row to start their west coast road trip, with two more games left to play in the new house of horrors, which is otherwise known as Petco Park. The Padres have a 28-14 (.667) record at Petco Park against the Mets since the ballpark opened in 2003, which is their best mark against any team. If you look at it from a series standpoint, the Mets have won one series out of fourteen since the ballpark opened. That is not good at all, no matter how you slice it. This is certainly not how the Mets wanted to get their road trip started, especially against a Padres team that was barely keeping it’s head above water in the crowded NL West.
Noah Syndergaard pitched a good game tonight and only had two stolen bases charged against him, although one of those bases would be a deciding factor in tonight’s game. Padres second baseman Jemile Weeks stole second base in the bottom of the fifth, which allowed center fielder John Jay to drive him in on an RBI single, which resulted in a 2-0 score. Syndergaard rarely puts runners on base, but when he does they ultimately cost him, as runners are 29-32 in stealing bases on Thor in his career. It was a gritty performance by Thor however, as the Padres battled with him consistently all night, but he pitched a good game all things considered.
The Mets struggles against left-handed pitchers was evident tonight as Drew Pomeranz only allowed one hit through five innings pitched. The Mets have faced four left-handed starting pitchers so far this season and those pitchers hold a combined ERA of 1.16. Granted the Mets did not have Neil Walker or Michael Conforto in tonight’s lineup but it is an area the Mets will look to improve on as the season progresses. The Mets had one true scoring opportunity, but Asdrubal Cabrera would be thrown out by left fielder Melvin Upton Jr., trying to score from first base with one out, on a Wilmer Flores double in the bottom of the 7th. The Mets also made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth bringing the tying and go-ahead run’s to the plate but could not muster anything off Padres closer Fernando Rodney. We can’t get out of San Diego soon enough.
- The Mets will look to salvage a split of the series in San Diego beginning tomorrow night after their six series winning streak was snapped tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 8:40 pm et, and you can catch tomorrow night’s game on WPIX and MLB Network.
- Bartolo Colon (2-1, 2.56 ERA) will look to reverse the Mets fortunes tomorrow night against Padres right-hander James Shields (1-4, 3.23 ERA).
