Things to know: Yankees vs. Mets


The Mets and Yankees kick off their four-game series tonight, and I have provided a preview of the upcoming series below.

  • The Mets are currently 6.5 games behind the Washington Nationals for first in the NL East, and are 2.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card position.
  • The Yankees are 7 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East. They are also 5.5 games back of the final AL Wild Card position.
  • The Yankees lead the all-time series with a 60-44 record in 104 matchups.
  • In six games played last season, the Yankees took the season series from the Mets 4-2.
  • The Mets and Yankees will play a home and home series with two games at Citi Field on Monday and Tuesday, and two games at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Both the Yankees and Mets have struggled offensively this season with the Yankees ranking 20th in the league with a .249 average and the Mets are last in the league with a .237 average.
  • The Mets rank third in the Majors with a 3.35 ERA and the Yankees rank 14th with a 4.20 ERA.
  • Mets pitchers have also allowed the fewest home runs in baseball with 91 and the Yankees have allowed the sixth most with 134.
  • Alex Rodriguez is second in both home runs and RBI’s in Subway Series history with 13 home runs and 39 RBI’s. He trails Derek Jeter in both categories.
  • Curtis Granderson ranks ninth in Subway Series history with 8 home runs.
  • Yankees reliever Dellin Betances has now slid into the role of Yankees closer after the Yankees traded away both Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller.
  • The Yankees¬†acquired reliever Tyler Clippard yesterday from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Clippard was acquired by the Mets last July and was an integral part of the Mets World Series run last season.
  • Depending on the Trade Deadline, both Curtis Granderson and Carlos Beltran will each be facing their former respective clubs. Granderson spent 4 seasons with the Yankees before signing with the Mets in December 2013. Beltran spent seven seasons with the Mets before being dealt to the San Fransisco Giants for Zack Wheeler back in ¬†2011.
  • With a minimum of two starts Masahiro Tanaka holds his lowest career ERA against the Mets with a 1.20 ERA in two starts.
  • Mark Teixeira owns the Mets over his career as he holds a career .301 average with 14 home runs and 48 RBI’s in 52 games played.
